Minneapolis, MN – A round of isolated but potentially severe thunderstorms is expected across southern Minnesota, including the Twin Cities, Friday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Chanhassen, the risk for strong to severe storms will peak between 7 and 10 p.m. in southern Minnesota and central Wisconsin. Areas east of the Twin Cities and into Wisconsin may experience earlier storm activity from 6 to 8 p.m. The main threat from these storms will be elevated cells producing hail.
Storms will kick off a messy weather pattern extending into the weekend. Saturday brings widespread rain with precipitation chances increasing to 80% by evening. By Sunday, rain transitions to a wintry mix and snow showers, with temperatures dropping into the 30s.
The highest chance for one inch or more of precipitation spans from Mankato to Eau Claire and Ladysmith. Cities like Red Wing, Rochester, and the Twin Cities have over a 50% probability of reaching that threshold.
Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor items, monitor forecasts, and remain alert for changing conditions. Drivers should prepare for slick roads Sunday as rain turns to snow.
This spring system will bring 0.75 to 1 inch of total precipitation through early Monday.
