Duluth, Minnesota – A surge of heat and humidity will blanket northern Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin starting Thursday, setting the stage for strong to severe thunderstorms late Thursday evening into Friday, with the potential for heavy rainfall and localized flooding.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, high pressure will keep skies mostly clear through Thursday morning. However, conditions will rapidly shift as temperatures climb into the upper 70s and mid-80s, with increased humidity triggering scattered showers Thursday evening. A greater threat emerges Friday, with widespread rain and embedded storms likely across the region. Gusty winds, flash flooding, and isolated hail are possible.
Cities including Duluth, Hibbing, Grand Marais, and Superior should brace for stormy commutes Friday morning. Roads near Lake Superior could be slick due to early downpours. Outdoor events Thursday night and Friday may be delayed or canceled. Residents should charge devices, secure outdoor furniture, and avoid low-lying areas prone to flooding.
Storm chances taper slightly into the weekend, but scattered showers remain possible through Sunday, especially during the afternoons. Highs will range from the mid-70s to low 80s, with nighttime lows in the upper 50s to mid-60s.
Additional storm watches may be issued, especially if conditions escalate Thursday night.
