Minneapolis, Minnesota – A sustained stretch of wintry weather is expected to take hold across Minnesota beginning Thursday, with increasing snow chances and a surge of Arctic air combining to create hazardous travel conditions through the weekend and into early next week.

According to the National Weather Service and NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, Minnesota is positioned for near- to above-normal snowfall during the January 15–19 period as a strong cold front pushes through the Upper Midwest. Temperatures are forecast to fall well below seasonal averages, allowing snow to accumulate efficiently and persist on roadways.

Northern Minnesota, including Duluth, International Falls, Bemidji, and the Iron Range, is likely to see the most persistent snowfall. Periods of moderate snow, combined with gusty winds, could reduce visibility and lead to drifting on rural roads. Areas near Lake Superior may also experience enhanced snowfall at times as cold air flows over the warmer lake waters.

Central and southern Minnesota, including St. Cloud, Mankato, Rochester, and the Twin Cities metro, will also see increasing snow chances as the cold front moves through. While snowfall totals may vary, even lighter accumulations paired with sharply colder temperatures could result in slick roads, icy intersections, and dangerous morning commutes. Refreezing is expected overnight as temperatures plunge.

Major travel routes such as Interstate 94, Interstate 35, U.S. Highway 52, and Highway 169 may be impacted by snow-covered pavement and blowing snow, especially in open and rural areas.

Residents are urged to prepare for prolonged winter conditions, avoid unnecessary travel during snow bursts, and take precautions against extreme cold. This cold, active pattern is expected to persist into early next week, with additional snow advisories or warnings possible as conditions evolve.
