MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Much of Minnesota, including the Twin Cities metro, is under a severe thunderstorm watch until 9 a.m. Saturday as strong storms move east across the state. Residents may see damaging wind gusts, large hail, and dangerous lightning before conditions improve later in the morning.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, the watch covers more than 35 counties, stretching from the South Dakota border east through the Twin Cities and down into southern counties near the Iowa line. Cities under the watch include Minneapolis, St. Paul, Mankato, Rochester, Worthington, and Faribault.

Winds up to 60 mph and hail up to one inch in diameter are possible. Power outages and downed trees could slow early travel, and drivers are urged to use caution on I-35, I-90, and I-94 where heavy rain could create ponding on roads. Outdoor activities early Saturday should be postponed until the storms clear.

Residents should charge devices and secure loose items outdoors. The severe threat is expected to taper off by mid-morning, though scattered showers may linger into the afternoon. Additional alerts could be issued if storms redevelop later in the day.
