Minneapolis, Minn. – Thunderstorms capable of damaging winds and large hail are expected to sweep across central and eastern Minnesota Tuesday evening, prompting a Severe Thunderstorm Watch in 20 counties through 10 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, the watch area includes Anoka, Stearns, Wright, Isanti, and Pine counties, where storms could intensify quickly this afternoon. Gusts over 60 mph and quarter-size hail are possible, along with frequent lightning and localized power outages.
Cities in the path include St. Cloud, Brainerd, Elk River, Cambridge, and Willmar. Highway corridors like I-94, U.S. 10, and MN-23 could see reduced visibility and slick conditions during the evening commute. Boaters on area lakes are urged to seek shelter before storms arrive.
Residents should secure outdoor items, charge mobile devices, and be prepared for warnings. If outdoors, avoid open areas and tall objects during lightning activity.
This is the first widespread severe thunderstorm watch of July in this region. The NWS may issue additional warnings as storms develop west to east through late evening.
