Minnesota – Slushy roads could quickly turn wet across southern Minnesota through Feb 23-27 as a warm front advances north, bringing a rain-to-snow mix before shifting mainly to rain.

According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, temperatures across the Upper Midwest are expected to trend near to slightly above seasonal averages during the Feb 23-27 period, while precipitation probabilities run above normal. As milder air pushes into the region, southern and central Minnesota will see precipitation type changes that may impact travel.

Minneapolis and St. Paul along I-94 and I-35 could begin with wet snow or a rain-snow mix before transitioning to rain as temperatures rise. That shift may create slushy buildup on untreated roads before melting begins. Rochester and Mankato may experience a similar pattern, with early slick spots giving way to steady rain. Farther north, including Duluth and the Iron Range, colder air may hold longer, allowing snow to linger before any changeover occurs.

MnDOT crews may monitor bridges and elevated roadways where brief icing is possible during transitions. Drivers should prepare for changing road conditions over short distances and allow extra time during peak travel hours.

Additional updates may follow as the warm front reshapes conditions through Feb 23-27.
