Duluth, MN – Much of northeast Minnesota is under near-critical fire weather conditions today, with officials urging residents to take extra precautions before burning.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, relative humidity is expected to fall between 20 and 30 percent Sunday, September 28, creating dry conditions across the region. Breezy southwest winds gusting 15 to 20 mph will add to the fire danger.

Forecasters noted that the driest conditions are expected this afternoon, covering most of northeast Minnesota, excluding Pine and Lakeshore Cook counties. The combination of low humidity and gusty winds raises the likelihood of fires spreading quickly if they start.

The National Weather Service advised residents to check for local burning restrictions and fire danger ratings before engaging in outdoor burning. Officials also stressed the importance of reporting any fire activity promptly to local authorities.

Communities from Duluth and Hibbing to International Falls may feel the greatest impact, with fire weather conditions peaking late Sunday afternoon. Authorities are asking residents to avoid unnecessary outdoor burning and remain alert to changes in weather conditions that could further elevate the risk.
