Duluth, Minn. – Dangerous rip currents are expected along Lake Superior’s shoreline Friday, posing a life-threatening risk for swimmers at beaches in Duluth and Superior, including Park Point and Wisconsin Point. The National Weather Service is urging residents and visitors to stay out of the water until conditions improve.
According to the National Weather Service Duluth office, strong waves and rip currents are making swimming extremely hazardous throughout the day. Anyone caught in a rip should remain calm, swim parallel to the shore until out of the current, and then head back toward land.
Lifeguards will be on duty at Park Point Beach, but officials warn against swimming alone or without safety supervision. Beachgoers are encouraged to stay close to shore, avoid entering the water during peak waves, and keep an eye on children near the surf.
City emergency managers stress that visitors should never underestimate Lake Superior’s power, noting that even strong swimmers can be pulled far from shore in seconds.
High rip current risks remain in effect through Friday evening, with updates expected later if conditions persist into the weekend.
