Duluth, Minnesota – Roads across northeastern Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin could turn slick within hours overnight as a mix of snow and ice moves in ahead of the Tuesday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, a Winter Weather Advisory begins as early as 1 a.m. Tuesday for Duluth, Brainerd, and surrounding areas, with additional advisories expanding north and west through the evening. Snow accumulations will remain light, generally under 2 inches, but ice buildup up to 0.10 inches will create hazardous travel conditions.
The Duluth-Superior area, along with Hinckley, Grand Rapids, and Ashland, may see roads become icy before sunrise Tuesday. Bridges and untreated surfaces will freeze first, especially along I-35, US-2, and Highway 53.
Further north, International Falls and Ely will see steady snowfall beginning Monday evening, continuing through Tuesday with up to 2 inches expected. Along the North Shore, including Grand Marais and Isabella, a light glaze of ice combined with snow could reduce visibility and make travel difficult through the day Tuesday.
Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and check 511 road conditions before traveling. Residents should also use caution on sidewalks and driveways as surfaces become slippery.
The advisory remains in effect through Tuesday evening in northern areas, with conditions improving later in the day. Additional updates may be issued if icing becomes more widespread.
