Minneapolis, Minn. – Minnesotans from the Twin Cities to Mankato are facing life-threatening heat through Sunday evening, with heat index values soaring as high as 115° and overnight lows remaining stubbornly in the 80s.

According to the National Weather Service in Chanhassen, an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect until 9 p.m. Sunday, covering over 60 counties in Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Affected cities include Minneapolis, St. Paul, Red Wing, Rochester, Mankato, St. Cloud, and Eau Claire. The most intense conditions are expected in southern counties such as Blue Earth, Nicollet, and Martin, where the heat index may climb to 115°.

Residents are urged to avoid outdoor activity between noon and 6 p.m., stay hydrated, and seek out air-conditioned spaces. Vulnerable groups — especially children, older adults, and outdoor workers — face the greatest risk of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Metro Transit officials have warned of delays due to overheated infrastructure, and power usage is spiking across Xcel Energy’s grid.

Temperatures will remain dangerously high until at least Sunday night, offering little overnight relief. More advisories could be issued Monday if the heat lingers.
