DULUTH, Minn. – The wind off Lake Superior is restless this morning, whipping through leafless trees and carrying the smell of dry pine from the hills. Under a cloudless November sky, much of northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin faces a gusty, fire-prone start to the week before temperatures turn colder and rain chances return midweek.

The National Weather Service in Duluth warns that elevated fire weather conditions will continue through this afternoon, fueled by dry air and steady west winds. Gusts may reach 35 mph inland and up to 45 mph across exposed ridges and open farmland. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and follow local restrictions, as humidity values could drop into the low 20s — ideal conditions for rapid fire spread.

Despite the warmth and wind today, change is on the way. By Tuesday afternoon, clouds will increase as a cold front approaches from the west. That front brings a 20% chance of late-day showers or drizzle across the Arrowhead and Twin Ports region. Winds shift northwest Tuesday night, ushering in noticeably cooler air.

Wednesday will feel more like November should — highs near 49°F with a chilly breeze and partly sunny skies. From Thursday into Friday, scattered showers could mix briefly with light sleet or flakes over higher elevations if temperatures dip far enough, though accumulation is unlikely.

Looking ahead to the weekend, dry but cooler weather returns, keeping highs near 40°F. With early November’s warmth fading, the Northland edges one step closer to its first measurable snow of the season.
