Sioux Falls, SD – Portions of southwest Minnesota and east-central South Dakota remain under a cold weather advisory until 9 a.m. Tuesday as wind chills plummet to dangerous levels.
According to the National Weather Service, wind chills could drop as low as -30°F, creating severe frostbite risks within just 30 minutes of exposure. Affected areas include Lincoln, Lyon, Murray, Cottonwood, Nobles, Jackson, Pipestone, and Brookings counties. Cities such as Worthington, Jackson, and Brookings are bracing for the bitter start to the day.
The advisory, issued at 4:43 a.m. Tuesday, warns residents to limit outdoor exposure. Proper precautions, including wearing insulated clothing, gloves, and hats, are strongly recommended. Frostbite can occur quickly in such conditions, particularly on exposed skin.
Travelers should also exercise caution. Icy roads and prolonged exposure to the cold can pose additional dangers. The cold temperatures are expected to ease after 9 a.m., but staying informed is vital as wind chill remains a significant concern during the early hours.
Residents are encouraged to check on neighbors and loved ones, especially vulnerable groups like the elderly or young children. Pets should also remain indoors during this period to avoid exposure to dangerously low temperatures.
