DULUTH, Minn. – Residents across northern Minnesota are bracing for the coldest stretch of the fall season so far, as temperatures plunge into the 30s tonight with patchy frost expected. The chill deepens by late Tuesday, when a widespread freeze could blanket much of the Northland.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, frost may form early Tuesday, followed by subfreezing conditions Tuesday night through Wednesday morning. Counties including St. Louis, Itasca, Aitkin, and Cook could see temperatures dip into the upper 20s, threatening late-season crops and unprotected outdoor plumbing.

Drivers in rural areas should be alert for icy patches during early commutes, especially along shaded stretches of Highway 2 and Highway 53. Residents are urged to cover sensitive plants, disconnect garden hoses, and ensure pets have warm shelter.

The cold pattern will hold through midweek before milder air returns by Thursday. Spotter activation is not required at this time, but additional advisories may be issued if temperatures fall faster than expected.
