Duluth, Minn. – Northern Minnesota residents should prepare for a chilly night as a frost advisory takes effect early Sunday morning, with temperatures expected to dip to 32 degrees in parts of the region. Sensitive plants could be damaged or killed if left unprotected.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, the advisory runs from 2 a.m. until 8 a.m. Sunday across Koochiching, North Itasca, Central and North St. Louis, and Northern Cook and Lake counties. Communities including International Falls, Ely, Hibbing, Isabella, and Bigfork are under the alert. The advisory also covers Voyageurs National Park and the entire Boundary Waters region, along with tribal lands of the Bois Forte Band at Lake Vermilion, Nett Lake, and Deer Creek.
Residents are urged to bring potted plants indoors or cover gardens with breathable cloth to prevent damage. Tender vegetation is especially vulnerable during the first frost events of the season.
The cold will be short-lived, but temperatures are expected to rebound during the day Sunday. Additional advisories may be issued later this week as more cool air settles into the Northland.
