Duluth, Minn. – Northern Minnesota will see its first taste of fall overnight as a frost advisory takes effect from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. Monday, threatening gardens and outdoor plants.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, temperatures are expected to dip as low as 34 degrees across Koochiching, northern St. Louis, and northern Cook and Lake counties. Areas included in the advisory range from Ely and International Falls to Isabella, the Nett Lake area, Voyageurs National Park, and the Boundary Waters.
Cold, clear skies will allow frost to form quickly, posing a risk to sensitive vegetation. The weather service is urging residents to cover gardens, flowers, and late-season crops to prevent damage. Potted plants should be brought indoors where possible.
Travelers camping in the Boundary Waters or staying in Voyageurs National Park should prepare for the chill by packing extra layers and securing gear before temperatures plunge overnight.
The advisory is set to expire by 8 a.m. Monday, but another round of cold mornings could return later this week if skies remain clear.
