Minnesota wakes up to a crisp February chill, but the sky is clear and the thaw is already underway. Temperatures sit near 30 degrees at MSP Airport, with light southeast winds and dry pavement across much of the Twin Cities.
Sunshine dominates through the late morning and afternoon. Highs climb to near 53 degrees, well above mid-February averages. Snowbanks shrink under the bright sun, and melting increases along sidewalks and neighborhood streets. Watch for minor puddling where drains remain blocked by ice.
Tonight turns partly cloudy with lows near 29. Sunday starts with patchy fog before 7 a.m., then mostly sunny skies return. Highs reach near 49 degrees. Roads remain mainly dry, but early fog could briefly reduce visibility along I-94 and I-35W.
President’s Day Monday keeps the mild stretch going. Expect mostly sunny skies and highs near 50 degrees. That is a notable February thaw for the metro. Outdoor plans look favorable through the holiday afternoon.
Changes arrive Tuesday. Clouds increase with a 40 percent chance of rain by afternoon. Highs hold near 48, but east winds could gust up to 30 mph. Rain becomes likely Tuesday night, with temperatures staying above freezing near 37.
By Wednesday, colder air pushes back in. Rain may mix with or change to snow late in the day as highs top out near 42. Any transition could create slick spots if temperatures dip after sunset. This is the time of year when flash freezing can catch drivers off guard.
