Duluth, Minnesota – Torrential rain and a renewed round of thunderstorms could slam Duluth and the surrounding Northland again Thursday, July 24, with flood risks continuing into the morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, a Flood Watch remains in effect for South St. Louis, Aitkin, Carlton, Pine, and several nearby counties through early Thursday. Areas along Highway 53 and Interstate 35 may experience water-covered roadways as additional storms dump up to an inch of new rainfall atop already saturated ground.

Localized flash flooding is possible. Residents in low-lying areas, especially near rivers, creeks, and culverts, should be prepared to take action if water rises. Avoid non-essential travel overnight and early Thursday, and keep phones charged in case of power outages.

Showers are expected to taper off by midday Thursday, giving way to clearing skies and a high near 80°F. But the atmosphere doesn’t stay quiet for long.

Here’s your extended five-day forecast for Duluth and the Lake Superior shoreline:

  • Thursday, July 24: Storms early, clearing by afternoon. High 80°F.
  • Friday: Mostly sunny, high near 79°F. Cooler and calm.
  • Saturday: Mostly sunny, warmer with a high of 83°F. Breezy with gusts up to 25 mph.
  • Sunday: Chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms. High 81°F.
  • Monday: Another round of rain possible. High 82°F. Gusty north winds develop late.

Storm chances return again Sunday into Monday, but a clearer, milder trend may settle in by next Tuesday. Stay weather-aware and monitor NWS updates for any new advisories.
