Duluth, Minnesota – Scattered severe storms are expected to re-develop across Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin by early Tuesday afternoon, with the potential for large hail, damaging winds, and flash flooding, particularly near the Twin Ports region.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, rainfall totals between 1 and 3 inches have already fallen in parts of southern Koochiching and northwest St. Louis counties—including the Bois Forte Tribal Reservation and Nett Lake—prompting a Flood Advisory through noon. A broader Flood Watch remains in effect this afternoon into tonight for east-central Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin.
Storms are expected to intensify between noon and 3 p.m., moving east from Brainerd toward Duluth and Superior. While this morning’s weather lull brought only light rain and gusty winds, the afternoon round could bring torrential downpours and hazardous travel. Drivers are urged to avoid flood-prone areas and never drive through a flooded roadway.
Localized flash flooding, particularly in low-lying and urban areas, remains the greatest concern. Conditions are similar to a July 2022 event that caused road closures near Hibbing.
Further updates are expected as storms develop. Watches and warnings may be extended or upgraded as needed.
