Duluth, Minnesota – A dramatic temperature swing is sweeping across northern Minnesota, where highs in the 70s today will plunge into the 50s by Thursday morning as a strong cold front pushes through late Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, the front will bring sharply cooler air into the Northland beginning Wednesday evening, accompanied by clear skies and light winds — perfect conditions for early-season frost by the weekend. Cities like Hibbing and International Falls, which have already recorded lows in the 30s this week, are likely candidates for the region’s first advisory-level chill.

While no Frost Advisories have been issued yet, NWS meteorologists warn that the growing season is ending quickly, with average first freezes historically hitting mid-September across much of the region. In Hibbing and International Falls, first frosts have arrived as early as August 13 and August 20, respectively.

Drivers should be prepared for foggy commutes Thursday morning, and residents are urged to bring in sensitive plants or cover them by Friday morning. This cold snap marks the start of a pattern shift, with additional advisories likely in the coming weeks.
