Duluth, MN – Dangerous cold and ongoing snowfall are gripping northern Minnesota, with extreme cold warnings in effect until noon Tuesday. Wind chills as low as -50°F threaten frostbite in just minutes, while lake-effect snow continues along the Bayfield Peninsula and South Shore.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, snowfall near the Apostle Islands could total up to 4 inches by Tuesday evening. Northern Bayfield County and parts of Washburn will see the highest accumulations. Meanwhile, wind chills as low as -35°F to -50°F are expected across Crow Wing, St. Louis, and Carlton counties.

Residents should limit outdoor exposure, wear layers, and check on neighbors. Frostbite can occur in less than 10 minutes at these temperatures. The arctic cold also poses a risk to exposed water pipes and increases heating demands. Motorists on U.S. Route 2 and other highways should remain cautious due to icy conditions and limited visibility.

Monday will remain bitterly cold, with flurries possible during the day. Overnight lows could plunge to -20°F in Duluth, with little relief Tuesday as highs struggle to reach -1°F. Snow is expected Tuesday night, with accumulations of up to 3 inches possible near Duluth and Bayfield.

The forecast improves by midweek, with sunny skies and temperatures climbing to 18°F by Wednesday. However, the National Weather Service advises that the region remains at risk of further cold snaps and lake-effect snow through the weekend.

Plan ahead by using proper winter gear and keeping emergency kits in vehicles. Avoid prolonged outdoor activities during this extreme weather event.
