Duluth, Minn. – Drivers across northern Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin face dangerous travel conditions this morning as dense fog settles over the region, cutting visibility to less than a quarter mile in some areas. The fog is expected to linger through 10 a.m., creating slow and hazardous commutes.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, the advisory covers Cass, Itasca, Koochiching, northern St. Louis, and lakeshore Cook counties in Minnesota. Communities including Walker, Grand Rapids, International Falls, Orr, Ely, Grand Marais, and Grand Portage are waking up to limited visibility. Webcams from the Minnesota Department of Transportation showed near-whiteout conditions overnight in Schroeder, Effie, International Falls, and Grand Portage.
Officials urge drivers to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and use low-beam headlights. MnDOT warns that sudden pockets of dense fog could make highways, rural routes, and lake-adjacent roads especially dangerous.
The advisory is expected to lift by late morning, but additional updates could follow if fog redevelops overnight or midweek.
