Minneapolis, Minnesota – An intense blast of arctic air is set to grip Minnesota late this week, bringing some of the coldest temperatures of the winter and creating dangerous conditions statewide. Overnight lows are expected to plunge to around 16 degrees below zero, with daytime temperatures struggling to rise above the single digits through early next week.

According to the National Weather Service, the coldest period is expected from Saturday through Tuesday as a powerful polar air mass settles over the Upper Midwest. Even with limited snowfall, persistent winds will drive wind chill values well below zero at times, increasing the risk of frostbite during overnight and early morning hours.

The harshest conditions are expected across northern and central Minnesota, including Duluth, Brainerd, St. Cloud, and the Iron Range, though the Twin Cities metro will also experience prolonged subzero cold. Clear to partly cloudy skies may allow temperatures to drop rapidly at night, placing added strain on heating systems and increasing the risk of frozen pipes. While widespread snow is not expected, isolated flurries could still create slick spots on untreated roads.

State officials urge residents to avoid prolonged outdoor exposure, dress in multiple warm layers, and bring pets indoors. Homeowners should protect exposed plumbing, and drivers are advised to carry winter survival kits in case of vehicle trouble.

The deep freeze is expected to persist through Tuesday, with wind chill advisories or warnings likely as the extreme cold continues.
