Minneapolis, Minnesota – A single rumble of thunder today is your signal to act immediately, as lightning can strike within 10 miles of storms across Minnesota during the active spring and summer season.

According to the National Weather Service, lightning often strikes far beyond the heaviest rain, reaching areas where skies may still appear partly clear. Across Minnesota, warm-season instability combined with moisture from thousands of lakes fuels frequent thunderstorms capable of producing sudden cloud-to-ground lightning, especially during the afternoon and evening hours.

In Minneapolis, exposed areas like the Chain of Lakes, Minnehaha Park, and stretches along I-94 and I-35W quickly become high-risk zones when storms develop nearby. In St. Paul, areas near the Mississippi River, Como Park, and I-94 see increased exposure, while Duluth faces elevated risk along Lake Superior’s shoreline and higher elevations where storms can intensify quickly.

Lightning kills about 20 people annually in the United States, with many more suffering long-term injuries including neurological damage, memory loss, and cardiac complications. Many incidents occur during boating, fishing, and outdoor recreation when thunder is ignored or storms appear distant.

If you hear thunder, you are already within striking distance. Move indoors immediately into a fully enclosed building or a hard-topped vehicle. Avoid open fields, tall isolated objects, and water. Wait at least 30 minutes after the last thunder before returning outside.

Storm chances will continue across Minnesota through the season, with additional lightning alerts possible as conditions evolve.
