Duluth, Minnesota – Northern Minnesota is settling into an active winter pattern as a series of fast-moving clipper systems bring repeated rounds of light snow and wintry mix through midweek, followed by a more robust snowmaker late in the week.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, several weaker clippers will pass through the region through Wednesday, producing generally light snow accumulations and occasional wintry mixes. While individual systems are not expected to be impactful on their own, slick roads and reduced visibility may develop at times, especially during the overnight and early morning hours.

A stronger clipper system is expected to arrive Thursday into Friday, bringing more widespread snowfall across northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin. Most areas can expect 2 to 5 inches of new snow by the end of the week, with locally higher amounts possible along the South Shore snowbelt, including parts of Bayfield and Ashland counties.

Communities such as Duluth, Hibbing, Virginia, Ely, Grand Rapids, and International Falls should plan for periodic travel slowdowns as snow-covered roads develop with each passing system. Even light snowfall rates may create icy conditions on untreated roads.

Residents are encouraged to allow extra travel time and monitor updates as snowfall totals become clearer. Additional advisories may be issued as the late-week clipper approaches.
