Traverse County, Minnesota – Blizzard conditions are continuing in western Minnesota, creating dangerous and potentially impossible travel through early Monday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Aberdeen, a Blizzard Warning remains in effect for Traverse County until 3 a.m. CST Monday. The warning includes the city of Wheaton and surrounding areas.

Forecasters say additional snowfall of 5 to 7 inches is expected, combined with wind gusts reaching up to 45 mph. These conditions are producing widespread blowing and drifting snow, significantly reducing visibility.

The National Weather Service warns that whiteout conditions may occur, making travel extremely hazardous or impossible at times. Roads may become impassable, and rapidly changing visibility could strand motorists. Gusty winds may also cause tree branches to break, leading to isolated power disruptions.

Officials strongly advise that travel be restricted to emergencies only during the warning period. Anyone who must travel is urged to carry a winter survival kit and to remain with their vehicle if stranded.

Road condition updates for Minnesota are available at 511mn.org or by dialing 511.

Blizzard warnings are issued when sustained winds or frequent gusts of 35 mph or greater combine with falling or blowing snow to reduce visibility to a quarter mile or less for at least three hours, creating life-threatening conditions.

Residents are encouraged to monitor official forecasts and alerts as conditions evolve overnight and into early Monday.
