Brainerd, Minnesota – Drivers across the Brainerd Lakes region could face near-whiteout conditions overnight as strong winds combine with blowing snow, reducing visibility to less than a half mile before the Friday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, a High Wind Warning is in effect from midnight tonight until 7 a.m. Friday for Crow Wing County and southern Cass County, including the communities of Brainerd and Pine River. Northwest winds will increase to 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 60 mph, strong enough to knock down trees and power lines.

The powerful gusts could trigger widespread power outages, especially in wooded areas across the Brainerd Lakes region where tree limbs may snap under sustained winds. Blowing snow will also create rapidly changing visibility on open roadways.

Transportation officials warn that travel could become hazardous along Highway 371, Highway 210, and rural county roads, where strong crosswinds may push vehicles across lanes and blowing snow reduces sight distance.

Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items before winds strengthen overnight and charge electronic devices in case power is lost. If travel is necessary late tonight or early Friday, drivers should slow down and remain alert for fallen branches and debris.

Conditions should begin improving after 7 a.m. Friday, though scattered outages and cleanup could continue into the morning hours.
