Duluth, Minnesota – Snow-covered roads and gusty winds will make travel difficult across far northern Minnesota through late Wednesday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until midnight CST Wednesday night for Koochiching, northern St. Louis and northern Itasca counties. An additional 4 to 6 inches of snow is expected, with wind gusts reaching 40 mph.
Communities including Ely, Bigfork and International Falls will see reduced visibility at times as blowing snow sweeps across open areas. Hazardous travel is likely along U.S. Highway 53, Highway 1 and roads near Voyageurs National Park and the Boundary Waters western area. Tribal lands of the Bois Forte Band, including Nett Lake and Deer Creek, are also under the warning.
The combination of steady snowfall and gusty winds will impact both the Wednesday morning and evening commutes. Drivers should slow down, allow extra travel time and check 511mn.org for updated road conditions before heading out.
Snow and wind will gradually ease late Wednesday night, but slick roads may linger into early Thursday as temperatures remain below freezing.
