Duluth, MN – Boaters and beachgoers near Lake Superior should prepare for dangerous conditions Tuesday as strong northeast winds push waves up to 4 feet along the Twin Ports.

According to the National Weather Service Duluth office, winds will shift late Monday night and increase through Tuesday, creating hazardous marine conditions across western Lake Superior. The agency warns that small craft may struggle in open waters, and swimmers face a heightened risk of rip currents near the Duluth-Superior shoreline.

Forecast models show maximum wind gusts reaching 30 to 40 mph along coastal points such as Two Harbors, Silver Bay, and Saxon Harbor. Wave heights are expected to peak Tuesday afternoon, with Twin Ports beaches seeing 3 to 4 feet and isolated areas further east near Grand Marais and Taconite Harbor reaching up to 5 feet.

The National Weather Service cautions that strong rip currents are likely on Twin Port beaches for much of Tuesday. Swimmers are urged to stay out of the water, and small boat operators are advised to delay travel until conditions improve.

Hazardous conditions may persist into Wednesday morning as winds gradually ease. Officials recommend checking updated forecasts before planning any activity on Lake Superior.
