Duluth, MN – An extreme cold warning is in effect for northern Minnesota starting Saturday at 6 p.m. through Tuesday at noon. Residents in Cook, Lake, and surrounding counties should prepare for dangerously low wind chills reaching -44 degrees.
According to the National Weather Service, a cold weather advisory will begin Friday evening and transition into an extreme cold warning over the weekend. Wind gusts of up to 50 mph are expected Friday night, creating challenging travel conditions and the potential for power outages. Wind chills this low can cause frostbite on exposed skin in under 10 minutes and increase risks of hypothermia.
Residents should secure outdoor items, insulate water pipes, and check on neighbors, especially the elderly. Outdoor pets must have shelter, food, and unfrozen water. Travelers should carry emergency kits and dress in multiple layers to prevent cold-related injuries.
Officials advise monitoring the latest weather updates and avoiding unnecessary outdoor activities. Vehicle batteries may struggle to start, and electric vehicles may see reduced driving ranges in these conditions. The extreme cold is expected to persist until Tuesday afternoon.
