Duluth, Minnesota – Strong to severe thunderstorms may bring heavy rain and minor flooding across northern Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin by Tuesday, while smoke-driven air quality concerns persist into Monday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, isolated strong storms could develop Sunday afternoon across the Arrowhead region. A more widespread round of storms is expected Tuesday, potentially dropping 1–2 inches of rain and triggering localized flooding. A cold front will move through by Wednesday, bringing cooler temperatures into the mid-60s and 70s across much of the state.

City-specific impacts include possible storm activity in Hibbing, Grand Rapids, and Superior, while Duluth may see the heaviest rain early Tuesday. Road conditions could become hazardous during peak commuting hours, especially on U.S. Highway 53 and MN-61.

In addition to storm threats, unhealthy air quality is forecast through Monday morning due to lingering smoke from wildfires. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency warns that residents in Duluth, Bemidji, and Brainerd may experience reduced visibility and respiratory irritation. Limit outdoor activity and use air purifiers indoors when possible.

Cooler weather will settle in by midweek, with another chance for showers Friday into Saturday. Air quality may fluctuate depending on winds and smoke return.
