Duluth, Minnesota – Strong afternoon thunderstorms are expected to return to Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin by Independence Day, capping off a week of scattered storm chances and rising temperatures.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, isolated PM thunderstorms could begin as early as Monday, with additional chances Wednesday and a more widespread system likely Friday, July 4. Highs will climb into the mid-80s by the holiday, with lows remaining in the mid-50s to low 60s throughout the week.

Monday will bring scattered general thunderstorms across the region, especially in the late afternoon, before drier weather returns Tuesday. A 30% chance of storms reemerges Wednesday, primarily in the evening. Thursday looks mostly sunny, but the threat of stronger, potentially severe storms grows again Friday afternoon into the evening.

Residents in Duluth, Superior, and surrounding areas including Cloquet and Ashland should prepare for possible delays, power outages, and changing outdoor plans on Friday. Those traveling for the holiday should monitor forecasts closely and have backup shelter options if storms develop.

More details on the July 4 storm threat are expected midweek. Stay weather-aware and check for alerts, especially if attending outdoor events.
