Minneapolis, Minnesota – Triple-digit heat indexes and rising rivers could collide in central Minnesota just as Fourth of July celebrations begin.
According to the National Weather Service in Chanhassen, isolated strong storms may develop Thursday evening across southern and central Minnesota. By Friday, a sweltering heat index nearing 97°F will sweep into the Minneapolis metro, setting the stage for another round of thunderstorms Friday night into Saturday.
A Flood Warning remains active until Wednesday morning for the Crow River at Rockford, affecting Wright and Hennepin counties. The river crested at 10.4 feet and is expected to stay at flood stage through Saturday morning, threatening roads and low-lying areas near Highway 212 and local riverbanks. Officials urge residents to avoid flooded roadways and use caution near streams.
Heading into the weekend, Saturday brings a 70% chance of storms, especially after 1 p.m., with possible thunder and locally heavy rain. Rainfall totals could reach three-quarters of an inch by nightfall.
Though Sunday offers some relief, the unsettled pattern will linger through midweek with more storm chances and humid air holding firm.
