Duluth, Minnesota – A surge of smoke and scattered thunderstorms will move into northeast Minnesota by Saturday afternoon, complicating travel and outdoor plans around Duluth and the North Shore.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, areas of smoke will spread across the region after 2 p.m. Saturday, followed by a 40% chance of thunderstorms. West winds up to 10 mph—with gusts near 15 mph—could make visibility poor, especially along I-35 and near Duluth Sky Harbor Airport. Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity and keep windows closed if smoke thickens.

Sunday offers a break, with sunshine and breezy conditions as highs climb to 83°F. Southwest winds could gust up to 20 mph, creating elevated fire risk in dry areas. But storm chances creep back in by Sunday night, with a slight (20%) chance of thunderstorms continuing into early Monday.

By Monday night, showers and thunderstorms become more widespread. A moist southeast wind flow will push chances to 50% Monday night and Tuesday, when thunderstorms are likely after 1 p.m., with highs reaching 78°F.

Five-Day Duluth Forecast:

  • Saturday: Smoke and PM storms; high 76°F
  • Sunday: Breezy and sunny; high 83°F
  • Monday: Clear, then storms late; high 82°F
  • Tuesday: Showers, storms likely after 1 p.m.; high 78°F
  • Wednesday: Cooler, breezy with more rain chances; high 66°F

Storms are expected to persist through Wednesday night. Continue monitoring updates as more advisories may be issued.
