Montevideo, Minn. – Western Minnesota residents should brace for sweltering heat Saturday, as temperatures and humidity combine to push heat index values past 100°F across several counties.

According to the National Weather Service in Chanhassen, a Heat Advisory is in effect from noon to 8 p.m. CDT Saturday for Chippewa, Lac Qui Parle, Stevens, Swift, and Yellow Medicine counties. Cities including Montevideo, Morris, Benson, Madison, and Granite Falls are expected to feel heat index values up to 102°F, increasing the risk for heat-related illness.

Outdoor workers, older adults, and young children are especially vulnerable during this period. Emergency officials urge residents to stay hydrated, limit time outside, check on neighbors, and ensure pets have access to shade and water. Air-conditioned public spaces such as libraries or community centers may offer relief for those without access to cooling.

This is the seventh heat advisory issued for the region this season and could precede additional warnings as July temperatures remain above average.

More alerts may follow if temperatures or humidity increase.
