Sioux Falls, S.D. – A fast-developing line of severe thunderstorms is prompting urgent weather alerts across eastern South Dakota and southwestern Minnesota Sunday night, with damaging winds and hail possible through midnight.
According to the National Weather Service, Severe Thunderstorm Watch 548 now includes more than 25 counties, spanning from Redfield to Sioux Falls in South Dakota and from Ortonville to Worthington in Minnesota. The expanded watch includes major cities such as Watertown, Brookings, Mitchell, Huron, and Marshall.
In South Dakota, impacted counties include Spink, Clark, Codington, Grant, Deuel, Hamlin, Roberts, Beadle, and Minnehaha. Minnesota counties under watch include Cottonwood, Lyon, Nobles, and Rock. Communities could see wind gusts up to 60 mph and quarter-sized hail, especially along I-29 and U.S. Highway 14 corridors.
Residents are urged to remain indoors, secure outdoor items, and keep weather alerts enabled on mobile devices. Power outages and tree damage are possible, particularly in rural areas with limited shelter.
The watch remains in effect until 12 a.m. CDT. Additional warnings could be issued as the storm front progresses eastward overnight.
