Aberdeen, S.D. – A dangerous heatwave will sweep across South Dakota and western Minnesota this weekend, with heat index values soaring as high as 103°F by Friday morning and lasting through Sunday evening.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Aberdeen and Grand Forks, Extreme Heat Watches are in effect from Friday through Saturday for central South Dakota, expanding to southeast North Dakota and west-central Minnesota by Sunday. Affected cities include Aberdeen, Pierre, Bemidji, Watertown, and Fergus Falls.
The intense heat, combined with high humidity, could lead to an elevated risk of heat-related illness, especially for vulnerable populations like children and seniors. Authorities urge residents to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activity, and check on neighbors without air conditioning.
In Minnesota, Sunday afternoon could bring peak heat index values near 100°F to Lake of the Woods, Wadena, and Otter Tail Counties. Across eastern South Dakota, towns including Sisseton, Milbank, and Redfield could experience back-to-back days of extreme heat starting Friday.
This marks one of the first significant heatwaves of the summer season for the Upper Midwest. Cooling shelters may open in affected counties, and further advisories could be issued if conditions worsen.
⚠️ Heat alerts remain active through Sunday evening. Updates will follow as conditions evolve.
