Pierre, S.D. – A dangerous wave of heat is expected to blanket much of central and northeast South Dakota and the Minnesota border region Saturday, with heat index values climbing as high as 104 degrees by mid-afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Aberdeen, a Heat Advisory is in effect from noon to 8 p.m. CDT Saturday for over 20 counties, including major population centers like Aberdeen, Pierre, and Sisseton. Cities along U.S. Highway 12 and I-90 will be particularly vulnerable to heat-related stress during peak daylight hours.

In Jones, Lyman, and Buffalo Counties—including Murdo, Kennebec, and Fort Thompson—heat index values are forecast to peak between 102 and 104 degrees, increasing the risk of heat stroke and other illnesses, especially for outdoor workers and vulnerable populations.

Residents in Traverse and Big Stone Counties in western Minnesota, including Wheaton and Ortonville, should also prepare for oppressive humidity and heat. Precautions include staying indoors when possible, wearing light clothing, and limiting strenuous activity to early morning or late evening.

Those without reliable air conditioning should consider visiting cooling centers or checking in with local emergency management for resources. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends frequent breaks and shaded rest for anyone working outside.

This is the most widespread heat event in the region since early July. Advisories may expand if conditions worsen. Stay alert for updates through Saturday evening.
