Mankato, MN – A widespread winter storm continues to impact southern Minnesota and western Wisconsin today, with prolonged periods of snow expected to create hazardous travel conditions into tonight, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Twin Cities/Chanhassen.
A series of Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect across multiple counties, including:
- Watonwan, Blue Earth, Waseca, and Steele Counties (St. James, Mankato, Waseca, Owatonna): 6–8 inches expected through midnight tonight.
- Le Sueur and Rice Counties (Le Sueur, Faribault): 4–6 inches expected through 6 AM Sunday.
- Redwood, Brown, and Nicollet Counties (Redwood Falls, New Ulm, St. Peter): 5–7 inches expected through midnight tonight.
- Goodhue County (Red Wing): 6–8 inches expected through 6 AM Sunday.
- Faribault, Freeborn, and Martin Counties (Fairmont, Blue Earth, Albert Lea): 7–10 inches, with the Interstate 90 corridor seeing the heaviest totals.
Snow will continue spreading eastward across Minnesota and into western Wisconsin throughout the day, occasionally reaching moderate intensity. The heaviest snowfall is expected near and south of a Redwood Falls–Le Sueur–Cannon Falls line, with localized totals near 10 inches along I-90.
Roads—and especially bridges and overpasses—will become slick and snow-covered. Areas of blowing snow may also reduce visibility, particularly in open terrain. Travel may be very difficult at times, and officials encourage motorists to delay trips if possible.
The snow will gradually diminish from west to east tonight into early Sunday morning, though travel impacts may linger as temperatures fall.
Drivers can check statewide road conditions at 511mn.org or by calling 511, and should carry food, water, blankets, and a flashlight if travel is unavoidable.
