Duluth, MN – A powerful winter storm will bring heavy snowfall and dangerous whiteout conditions to Minnesota this weekend, with totals reaching up to 10 inches in some areas. The heaviest snowfall is expected Saturday night into Sunday, with intense rates of 1 inch per hour at times.
According to the National Weather Service, snow will develop Saturday morning and intensify throughout the afternoon, leading to treacherous travel conditions. Strong southeast winds will cause blowing and drifting snow, reducing visibility to near zero in open areas. Drivers on major highways, including I-35 and U.S. Highway 2, should prepare for icy roads and hazardous whiteout conditions.
Snowfall rates will peak at 1 inch per hour Saturday evening into early Sunday, making travel especially dangerous. By Sunday afternoon, snowfall will gradually taper off, but gusty winds could continue to cause drifting and blowing snow, particularly near the North Shore. Freezing drizzle is also possible late Sunday night into early Monday, adding an extra layer of ice to already slick roads.
Looking ahead, Monday morning’s commute will remain difficult, with lingering snow and freezing fog reducing visibility. Tuesday could bring additional light snow showers, followed by a sharp midweek cooldown, with overnight lows dropping to near zero.
Officials urge residents to prepare for extended travel delays and potential power outages due to strong winds. If you must travel, pack an emergency kit with blankets, food, and water, and check road conditions frequently.
