Duluth, MN – Northern Minnesota is gearing up for a significant snow event beginning early Thursday, impacting areas along the I-35 corridor and stretching across northeastern counties. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Duluth reports that rain showers will transition to snow overnight, bringing accumulation through the morning hours. Those planning to travel are advised to prepare for potentially hazardous conditions, especially on untreated roads.
According to the NWS, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the Twin Ports, parts of the I-35 corridor, and areas further east, with snowfall predictions of 1 to 4 inches. However, localized areas in Burnett County and southern Douglas County may see higher totals, with accumulations possibly reaching up to 6 inches in specific spots. Snowfall rates will depend on surface temperatures and other variables, which could result in varied conditions across the region.
By mid-morning Friday, snowfall is expected to taper off near Lake Superior due to warmer surface temperatures but could intensify inland. Road crews are expected to be active throughout the day to manage snow accumulation, though drivers should remain cautious as roads could be slick, especially during peak morning commute hours.
Looking ahead, temperatures across northern Minnesota will remain below freezing, with additional snowfall chances through the weekend. A brief reprieve on Saturday is forecasted, but more snow may be possible early next week. Residents are encouraged to stay updated on weather alerts and check road conditions frequently.
