Duluth, MN – A spring storm system is expected to bring a mix of snow and freezing rain across northern Minnesota from Friday into Saturday, with the Twin Ports area among the hardest hit.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, the highest probability for ice accumulation is centered around Duluth, Virginia, Ashland, and Grand Marais, where residents face a most likely chance of icy conditions. Simultaneously, snow accumulation probabilities range from moderate to most likely in areas such as Ely, Twin Ports, and Ashland. Some areas could continue to experience snowfall into Sunday.

The storm’s timing could impact travel through early Saturday, particularly in higher elevation zones where freezing rain may cause slick roads and hazardous conditions. Residents in Hayward, Siren, and Phillips should also prepare for significant ice or snow impacts, especially on untreated surfaces and secondary roads.

Officials recommend limiting non-essential travel during peak hours of the storm and keeping emergency kits in vehicles. While the Twin Ports area typically sees fluctuating spring conditions, this storm system could bring some of the more intense late-March accumulations in recent years.

For updates, residents are encouraged to monitor local advisories and check MnDOT’s 511 service for real-time road conditions.
