Minneapolis, Minn. – A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for much of Minnesota until 4 a.m. Saturday, with forecasters warning of damaging winds, large hail, and intense lightning overnight. The watch covers the Twin Cities metro, Duluth, Rochester, and dozens of counties from the Canadian border to the Iowa line.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, storms will track east across the state late tonight, with the strongest cells capable of producing 60–70 mph wind gusts and hail up to the size of golf balls. Heavy downpours may reduce visibility and cause brief street flooding, particularly in low-lying urban areas.
Drivers along Interstates 35, 94, and 90 should be prepared for sudden wind shifts, ponding water, and debris on roads. Outdoor events and late travel are strongly discouraged until the storms pass. Residents are urged to secure patio furniture, charge devices, and monitor local alerts in case warnings are issued.
The storm threat will gradually shift east by daybreak, but additional rounds of rain and thunder are possible through the weekend.
