Duluth, Minn. – Severe storms are developing across northern and central Minnesota this evening, prompting a widespread Severe Thunderstorm Watch that remains in effect until 10 p.m. Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, the watch includes 26 counties stretching from Lake of the Woods and Beltrami to Becker, Crow Wing, and St. Louis. The main threats include wind gusts up to 60 mph, large hail, and frequent lightning.

Cities at elevated risk include Bemidji, Duluth, Moorhead, and Alexandria. Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, remain indoors during thunder, and monitor local alerts. Power outages are possible, especially in rural areas where trees may be downed by gusty winds.

Drivers on U.S. Highways 2, 10, and 71 should be alert for sudden visibility drops and pooling water during downpours. Emergency managers recommend delaying evening travel where storms are active and keeping phones charged in case of service disruptions.

Storms are expected to track eastward through the night. Additional warnings may be issued as cells intensify.
