Minneapolis, MN – The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a new scam targeting Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan recipients. Deputies say the fraudulent scheme involves fake letters that appear to come from the sheriff’s office, using official logos and staff names to trick recipients into providing personal or financial information.

According to the sheriff’s office, one official report has been filed so far, but authorities believe the scam could be spreading quickly and often goes unreported.

Officials say the victim in the reported case suspected fraud and contacted the sheriff’s office directly, preventing potential loss. Deputies are reminding residents to verify any suspicious calls or mail by contacting the agency directly—and never share personal details unless you are certain of the source.

“If something feels off, hang up and call us,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “Don’t take the bait.”

Residents who believe they may have received similar letters are encouraged to contact the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office immediately.
