Mankato, MN – Several Blue Earth County residents have reported receiving fraudulent text messages claiming to be from “E-ZPass” and warning of unpaid tolls.
According to the Blue Earth County Sheriff’s Office, these texts include a link directing recipients to pay alleged toll charges to avoid penalties or legal consequences. Officials confirmed this is a scam and warned that Minnesota E-ZPass will never contact individuals by text or email regarding payments or personal information.
Authorities urge residents not to click on any links or respond to these messages. Instead, recipients should delete the message immediately and block the sending number if possible. Individuals who may have provided personal or financial information are encouraged to take immediate steps to protect their accounts and identity.
There is no need to report these messages to law enforcement unless a financial loss has occurred. Residents can report fraud attempts to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov or the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
The Sheriff’s Office is reminding Minnesotans to stay vigilant against ongoing scams and avoid engaging with unsolicited digital messages requesting sensitive information.
