Duluth, Minnesota – Gardeners and campers across northern Minnesota should brace for a sudden cold snap, as temperatures are expected to dip to freezing overnight Friday into early Saturday, triggering a Frost Advisory for the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, the advisory is in effect from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. Saturday for Koochiching, North Itasca, Central and North St. Louis, and Northern Cook and Lake counties. Areas impacted include International Falls, Hibbing, Ely, Isabella, Bigfork, and the entire Boundary Waters, including tribal lands such as Nett Lake and Lake Vermilion.
Temperatures are forecast to fall as low as 32 degrees, leading to widespread frost that may damage or kill unprotected plants. Campers in Voyageurs National Park and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area should prepare for a colder-than-usual night. Outdoor growers are urged to cover or bring in any sensitive vegetation ahead of nightfall.
The advisory is expected to expire by mid-morning Saturday, with no additional alerts currently in place. However, further advisories are possible if cold air lingers through the weekend.
