Duluth, Minnesota – Heavy snow along Minnesota’s North Shore could disrupt travel through Thursday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, the latest “Most Likely” snowfall forecast calls for significant accumulations from Duluth northeast through Silver Bay and Grand Marais by 6 p.m. Thursday.

Communities along Highway 61 near Lake Superior are expected to see the highest totals. Silver Bay could receive 12 to 21 inches, while Grand Marais is forecast for 10 to 17 inches. Two Harbors may see between 9 and 17 inches. Duluth is projected to receive 6 to 12 inches.

Further inland, totals drop off sharply. Ely is forecast for 4 to 8 inches, while areas south toward Hinckley and Spooner may see little to no accumulation.

The Weather Service notes these projections represent the middle 50% of possible outcomes. There remains a 25% chance totals could exceed the upper end of the forecast range, meaning localized areas near Lake Superior could approach two feet of snow.

Travel along Highway 61 and connecting roadways may become hazardous, especially Wednesday night into Thursday. Reduced visibility and snow-covered roads are likely during heavier bands.

This system could significantly impact North Shore communities, including students and workers commuting between Duluth and Cook County.

Snow is expected to taper Thursday evening.

Residents are urged to monitor updated forecasts at weather.gov/duluth and check local road conditions before traveling.
