Grand Forks, North Dakota – An Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect across much of Minnesota and eastern North Dakota as dangerously cold Arctic air continues to grip the region, with wind chills plunging as low as 50 to 55 degrees below zero.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, the Extreme Cold Warning continues until 3 p.m. Friday for parts of west-central Minnesota and southeastern North Dakota, including Wilkin, Otter Tail, Wadena, Grant, Ransom, Richland, and Sargent counties. Afterward, a Cold Weather Advisory will remain in effect through noon Sunday, with wind chills still reaching 40 below zero.

Across a broader portion of northern and western Minnesota and eastern North Dakota—including cities such as Fargo, Grand Forks, Bemidji, Moorhead, Thief River Falls, Devils Lake, Valley City, and Detroit Lakes—an Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect through noon Sunday. In these areas, wind chills may reach 55 below zero, creating extremely dangerous outdoor conditions.

Forecasters warn that frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 5 minutes under the coldest conditions. Prolonged exposure may also lead to hypothermia.

Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, dress in multiple layers including hats, face masks, and insulated gloves, and ensure pets and livestock are adequately sheltered. Extra caution should be used when traveling, as vehicle breakdowns in this cold can quickly become life-threatening.

The National Weather Service also encourages frequent checks on elderly neighbors and friends, and reminds residents to use space heaters safely—never using grills or generators indoors.

This prolonged cold outbreak is expected to gradually ease late Sunday, but conditions will remain hazardous until then.
