Fargo, North Dakota – Severe thunderstorms are expected to sweep across North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota overnight, with a watch now in effect until 7 a.m. CDT Sunday for over 45 counties across both states.

According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, Severe Thunderstorm Watch 547 was issued late Saturday night as strong storms developed across central and eastern North Dakota. The watch includes counties from Cass and Grand Forks to McKenzie and Ward, and stretches into Minnesota’s Beltrami, Marshall, and Lake of the Woods counties.

The main threats include damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph, large hail, and frequent lightning. Isolated power outages and downed trees are possible, especially in open areas and along U.S. Highways 2 and 281. Cities like Fargo, Minot, Bismarck, and Grand Forks should prepare for overnight storm activity and rapidly changing weather conditions.

Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, secure outdoor items, and ensure mobile devices are charged in case of outages. Stay indoors and away from windows during severe warnings.

Storms are expected to weaken after sunrise, but additional watches or warnings may be issued if storms persist eastward into Sunday morning.
