GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Stormy skies are moving through the Red River Valley today as scattered thunderstorms bring heavy rain, gusty winds, and lightning to parts of eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota. The unsettled weather won’t last long—by Friday, the region turns sunny and mild, just in time for weekend plans.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, widespread showers and a few thunderstorms will continue through the morning before tapering by evening. Some storms may produce brief downpours, especially along U.S. Highway 2 and I-29 between Grand Forks and Crookston. Rainfall totals could reach a quarter inch in spots. Drivers should allow extra time for wet roads and keep headlights on during heavier bursts.

Friday brings a dramatic change with partly sunny skies, highs near 59°F, and a south wind gusting up to 30 mph. The weekend stays pleasant, with temperatures in the mid-50s to upper 50s under mostly clear skies—ideal for fall leaf viewing, football tailgates, or a visit to local pumpkin farms.

By Sunday night, clouds will increase as a weak front approaches, but significant rain isn’t expected. Cooler, breezy air may follow early next week. Residents should take advantage of Friday and Saturday’s calm stretch before the next round of fall changes arrives.
